Firm Builds 1st Solar Panel Plant in Lake Mary, Florida

Advanced Solar Phontonics LLC, a laser technology provider for solar panel makers, will build the first solar panel module plant in Florida, creating up to 200 new jobs.

The $40 million-plus project includes a 100,000-square-foot buildout of Advanced Solar's 318,000-squaere-foot Lake Mary Headquarters factory.

Once completed, the factory will produce up to 40 megawatts of solar energy annually.

A solar plant in Florida will likely mean a potential decline in wait time and shipping costs that local solar companies face when getting equipment shipped from out of state.

In addtion this may finally provide an alternative for contractors to buy equipment here and keep the money in-state.*

Federal Tax Credit Update

Federal Tax Credit Update: Please be advised that changes to the federal tax credit affecting solar allow a grant in lieu of a credit for the business investment tax credit only, and not the residential tax credit. Residential customers will continue to be eligible for the solar tax credit through 2016. Businesses are eligible for the tax credit in the form of a grant for 2009 and 2010 only; thereafter the grant reverts to a credit through 2016. There was some confusion shortly after the tax credit changes were made that the grant provision applied to both residential and business customers. This is not the case. As such, residential customers will only benefit from the tax credit if they have a federal tax liability.

Vote "NO" on Amendment 3

Tallahassee, FL. - Florida solar energy advocates today announced they cannot support Amendment 3 - a proposal on this November's ballot they say is well intended but is confusing to voters and misses the mark on promoting a strong renewable energy policy.

Amendment 3 provides a tax exemption for wind hardening and renewable energy improvements for residential real property. While admirable in purpose, the Florida Solar Energy Industries Association said the amendment actually would repeal existing provisions that provide solar energy incentives for all property - including business and commercial buildings.

This year, the Florida Legislature and Gov. Crist enacted an energy bill, HB 7135, providing that any renewable energy devices installed on real property after Jan. 1, 2009 will be exempt from property tax. While well intentioned, advocates said Amendment 3 would have the effect of eliminating these current incentives for renewable energy devices installed on business and commercial properties.

"Businesses are some of the biggest consumers of energy in Florida, and that's why Gov. Crist has urged all Floridians and espcially businesses to use more renewable energy resources," said Bruce Kershner of the Florida Solar Energy Industries Association. "The impact of losing the commercial property tax exemption for renewable energy would be very damaging, and it would immediately put at risk existing business plans to deploy solar energy systems on commercial buildings.

Kershner also warned that Amendment 3 could be interpreted as inconsistent with the 2008 energy legislation, potentially rendering it void and erasing previous gains scored last session by advocates of renewable energy.

"As written, Amendment 3 could be a Trojan Horse that would reduce incentives for renewable energy resources," Kershner said. "That's why we oppose Amendment 3, and we urge Floridians to reject this misguided amendment on Election Day."

30% Federal Tax Credit Extended for 8 Years

WASHINGTON - On Oct. 3, 2008 by a vote of 263 to 171, the U.S. House of Representatives passed historic legislation that extends the 30-percent federal investment tax credit for both residential and commercial solar installations for 8 years. This landmark legislation is part of H.R. 1424, the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, designed to address the U.S. financial crisis. It is the most significant federal policy ever enacted for the solar industry.

"This bill puts the sun to work for every American," according to Rhone Resch President of Solar Energy Industry Association. "And by 2016, we expect solar energy to be the least expensive source of electricity for consumers."

The solar investment tax credit (ITC) provisions will:

· Extend for 8 years the 30-percent tax credit for both residential and commercial solar installations;

· Eliminate the $2,000 monetary cap for residential solar electric installations, creating a true 30-percent tax credit (effective for property placed in service after December 31, 2008);

· Eliminate the prohibition on utilities from benefiting from the credit;

· Allow Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) filers, both businesses and individuals, to take the credit;

· Authorize $800 million for clean energy bonds for renewable energy generating facilities, including solar.

Solar Power Keeps Development's Water Hot - Central Florida News 13

A development of homes in Kissimmee do a better job at utilizing solar energy than a dozen other neighborhoods in the Southeast and they got an award for it.

The 2007 Aurora Awards Committee gave Rey Homes' Villa Sol development an award called the ""Best Solar Energy Home."

Homeowners who have recently moved into this award-winning community said helping the environment isn't the only perk.

"I always hear about it, but wasn't really a big fan of it," said Shameer Hassan.

Hassan said he was never one of those "go green" enthusiasts, until now.

"It definitely works," Hassan said.

After living in his new home for only three months, Hassan said he is already saving money because of something that looks like a skylight.

But it is not a skylight. It is a solar panel that is used to give him hot water.

When Hassan wants hot water, he gets it. In fact, he says a solar hot water system works better than the standard one did. But, Hassan said, that isn't even the best part.

"You're saving money on your bill, but you actually have a bigger house," Hassan said.

AllSolar Service Company is teaming up with Rey Homes to build Villa Sol. They said a home with a solar hot water system will save you between 15 and 30 percent each month.

"So that allows you to have anywhere from $50 to $100 extra a month," said Aldo Martin, of Rey Homes.

Hassan said he likes knowing that his solar panel is not putting CO2 in the air -- that is the stuff that depletes the ozone layer and contributes to global warming.

Florida has been getting a bad rap lately because research groups have found it is not doing a good job at slowing down its CO2 emissions, so earlier this month, Gov. Charlie Crist set a goal of slashing the state's greenhouse gas emissions to 20 percent of levels we saw nearly two decades ago.

Rey Homes want to help.

"Conservation is a big focus in our industry right now, and we have chosen to do it as a standard feature," Martin said

The New American Home® (TNAH) will be celebrating its 25th anniversary when it opens its doors to attendees at the International Builders’ Show in Orlando next month, once again displaying innovative building materials, cutting-edge design and the latest construction techniques to provide home builders with inspiration for energy-efficient, durable and stylish homes.

And as the association prepares to launch the NAHB National Green Building Program, The New American Home will also hold the distinction of being the first show home built and certified to the program’s scoring tool. The house achieved a gold certification level.

Since its inception in 1984, The New American Home has showcased the products provided by the National Council of the Housing Industry (NCHI) — The Leading Suppliers of NAHB. It’s both a show home and a for-sale product, balancing architectural freedom with the bottom line. Mostly, The New American Home is a collection of ideas that the industry can take away — in large pieces, or bit by bit — and apply to millions of homes across the country each year.

This year’s project is a collaborative effort involving builder Robertson Homes, home designer The Sater Group, interior designer Robb & Stucky and landscaper Outside Productions; all contributed unique and innovative green features to the home’s design and construction.

Co-sponsored by NCHI and Builder magazine, The New American Home is a 6,725-square foot, plantation-style house located in the prestigious Waters Edge subdivision, a gated, 11-lot development adjacent to a private golf and country club community along the banks of Orlando’s Lake Nona.

The two-story home is near a lakefront park and boat dock and features luxuries inside and out, with a family suite on the first level to accommodate an elderly parent or long-term guest, a first-floor master suite, an open kitchen and leisure room combination and an upstairs club room complete with theater-quality entertainment.

The home’s 2,950 square feet of covered outdoor space includes a kitchen and salon with a fireplace featuring arched openings to the lake view and a landscaped pool and spa.

To ensure the home’s energy efficiency and innovation, two U.S. Department of Energy Building America teams have worked closely with NCHI. IBACOS, Inc. provided design and engineering support, and the Industrialized Housing Partnership provided performance testing.
